The Open Couple, and blatantly so!

The secret to a happy relationship is flushing only once.

Ok lets put that in perspective. As I walked into Kamani Auditorium to watch Faraz Khans version of Dario Fos The Open Couple, there was a buzz in the lobby with paint-faced costumed characters walking around. At the centre of it all, in the spotlight was a bid, white, porcelain shitpot. Before I knew it, I was sitting on that shitpot; sitting on one side of it anyway and sharing butt space with me was Anuj Gurwara, the male lead of the play. And as camera happily flashed away, those are the words he spoke.

The shitpot is actually the centerpiece of Farazs play, everything revolves around it. As husband and wife go through the emotional rollercoaster ride of trying to deal with an open marriage and all the accompanying agony, the shitpot watches in stony silence adding a new dimension simply by being present. The performances, both male and female, were very strong; one especially loved the improvisations thrown referring to Delhis chief-ministerless state of affairs and Article 377.

On Theatre
I do love theatre but the stage doesnt pay right?!

On META
I think its absolutely wonderful for theatre performers. Its great to be here.

On the significance of the shitpot
Well, it just came to me in a vision couple of years ago, a magnificent white shitpot right at the centre of the stage, spotlight and works and all. I wanted to use it somehow. To use it in this piece came to me after we started rehearsing. And look how that turned out!
