META Through the Years: Social Issues

META not only recognises and rewards all aspects of theatre production and stage craft it also highlights the very relevant issues that surround our society today.

Over the years META has shortlisted and awarded plays that have brought to centre stage concerns that have been marginalised for various reasons. One such play that comes to mind instantly is Gasha directed by Abhishek Mazumdar and produced by Indian Ensemble in 2013. This powerful play dealt with Kashmiri pandits being displaced in Kashmir due to the disturbance there. Like this, META emphasizes on bringing to the forefront plays that touch upon topical themes and issues that are taking the country by storm.

This year, METAs shortlisted plays yet again show this spirit of being able to portray contemporary problems. Loneliness, deterioration of human civilisation, homosexuality, old age as tragedy, a Dalit womans journey, emptiness in life, mythological stereotypes are all themes that awaken our sensibilities. The shortlisted plays have been carefully selected to demonstrate the commitment and dedication of theatre to deal with such issues.

Eagerly awaited, these plays are sure to motivate the viewers to think.
