Girish Karnad's Hayavadana is a modern classic. When it burst onto the Indian stage in the 1970s, it was an immediate success with audiences and critics alike. Using traditional Indian theatre techniques such as masks and a sutradhar (narrator), the play examines modern questions of identity and selfhood. There is a horse-headed man who longs to be complete, there is a young woman who mixes up the heads of her lover and her husband, there is a child who cannot speak -- the stories intertwine and illuminate each other as they ask the most important of all human questions: who am I?

Among the best of modern Indian plays, Girish Karnad’s Hayavadana has always been on my bucket list. It combines magic, myth, and realism to provide infinite theatrical prospects. I’m fortunate to have worked with some extremely talented artistes, each instrumental in making Hayavadana come alive. My approach to Hayavadana was the same as with my previous work - lead with my intuition and take that plunge into uncertainty. With Hayavadana, I have been able to experiment with that uncertainty in a much more profound way. The play greatly speaks to my soul & I hope it does the same for the audience.
