A satirical and critical commentary, based on Vijayan Detha’s Thakur Ka Roothna, Swang: Jas Ki Tas embodies the rich and ancient Indian folk theatrical form, Swang, in which folk tales are presented through song and dance, while weaving in social satire. This play is a satirical and critical commentary as well as an essentially humorous, musical performance. The story revolves around a Thakur (landlord) who frequently gets upset and makes irrational decisions. As the ruler of several villages, he compels everyone to follow his orders. One time, however, the Thakur commands that all the water-filled wells in the village be filled with sand, causing great distress among the villagers. In response, the villagers approach ‘Badi-Maaji’ to complain about the Thakur. What follows is both funny and sends out a strong social message.

It has long been my aspiration to bring this story to the stage through the vibrant folk theatre tradition of Swang. Swang is an ancient form of Indian folk theatre that is now on the verge of extinction. As one of India's oldest and richest performance forms, it embodies a unique blend of folk music, storytelling, dance, and theatrical expression. Swang has always been more than entertainment; it has been a medium through which communities reflected on themselves, questioned social norms, and shared collective wisdom. Music, folk songs, rhythm, and movement are not merely decorative elements in this production; they are the very language through which the story unfolds. Through humour, satire, and lively performances, Swang: Jas Ki Tas examines human nature and gently exposes the social evils, prejudices, and contradictions that continue to exist around us. For us, this production is both a tribute to the generations of folk artists who have kept the tradition of Swang alive and a sincere effort to ensure that this invaluable cultural heritage continues to inspire future generations.
