Chandni Raatein
The city hums, a clockwork machine of incessant rhythm. It's a world where perceptive submissiveness is a virtue; to feel too much, to yearn for more than the mundane, is often seen as a quaint folly, as a sure path to being left behind. Yet, in the silent corners, under the spectre-grey sky, a Romantic endures. This is the realm that Fyodor Dostoevsky crafted in his novella ‘White Nights’ and it is within this Dostoevskian architecture that Aarambh Mumbai’s ‘Chandni Raatein’ resides.
The stage pulls you straight into a Russian bar by the canal, evoking 19th-century St. Petersburg. Wooden counters scarred by time gleam under flickering lanterns, while pink and violet hues bathe the scene, as narration of the Deewana, the Dreamer begins. He is a man out of place, an anomaly in a world that refuses to resonate with his spirit. He wanders as the sun sets, in St. Petersburg's misty streets, crafting elaborate inner worlds because reality offers no real connection, up until a fateful evening by the canal.
He sees a girl, protects her from a drunkard and what ensues is a beautifully poignant love story. Or, perhaps, merely the semblance of one? The play leaves that question delicately suspended, inviting the audience to decide for themselves.
As the characters navigate the fragile space between hope and vulnerability, the Dreamer’s quiet yearning feels deeply personal and hauntingly familiar. Yet the charm of the play lies not merely in this trepidation but also in its distinct storytelling. By amalgamating classical Indian ragas with incisive Hindi poetry and the deeply introspective world-building characteristic of Dostoevsky’s writing, the production gives voice to a raw ache that many feel but rarely articulate.
Finally, if Russian literature has ever intrigued you—or if you just can’t resist a clever pun on vodka and Dostoevsky—Chandni Raatein is an experience you can’t miss. Catch Chandni Raatein live at the 21st edition of Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards.
