Lavani Ke Rang

Lavani is an ancient art form from Maharashtra that has been made popular by mainstream media, but its portrayal has been reduced to a mere ‘item number’. Lavani ke Rang gives a glimpse into the various types and styles of this unique art form. It also highlights the lives of traditional Lavani artists who come from matriarchal communities. The play is anchored by a Lavani theatre malkin who introduces the audience to the artists’ lifestyles and their world. The play also celebrates life’s myriad colours through traditional and modern Lavani performances.

Lavani, the traditional art form of Maharashtra, is hugely popular for its unabashed expression of sexuality and its direct involvement of the audience. But the mainstream media has popularised it only as a fast-paced, fusion art form. It has also portrayed Lavani women from the Sangeet Bari tradition at two extremes – either as victims or villains. Their matriarchal traditions, their work dynamics and their life stories, however, are not widely known. The play attempts to showcase all this and give Lavani and Lavani artists the respect and space they deserve.
