Mirel Masingkha (The will of Soul)

3rd March 2010 at Sri Ram Centre, 5:00pm

Producer: The Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory
Director: Yumnam Sadananda Singh
Language: Non Verbal
Duration:   1 Hour

Dedicated to Irom Chanu Sharmila, Mirel Masingkha is a physical play based on her repressed campaign against terrorism. In the last few decades Manipur has been witnessing a chaotic state full of incorrigible incidents: the stink, full of rot, corruption, killing, massacre, violence, oppression, and the inhuman crimes under the shield of the Black Law. Against such chaos stood up Irom Chanu Sharmila in the year 2000, with her Fast unto Death campaign. Her campaign is accused of being an attempt to suicide which is against all human constitutions. Sharmila has no plea for respite to the charges against her campaign. However she pleads the official for realization of her cause. The mime play venerates the unrelenting Spirit – Mirel personified of Irom Chanu Sharmila.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
The world mime theatre today employs various effects portraying meaningful and entertaining performances. India too has a rich culture of art, its manifestations and our persistent effort is on a fusion of mime with all other indigenous art form of Manipur for a more thriving mime performance of International standard.   In this play – above the facial gestures, powerful body movements are used for a more poignant enactment of violence inherent in the play. Moreover evocative costume, music, light, set and props are employed to project the present situation of Manipur. The play also provides a platform for the deaf and mute artists to exercise and bring forth their artistic skill.
